Dosipheus (Nemchinov)

Archimandrite Dosifei ( Nemchinov ; circa 1780 , Riga - March 6 (18), 1845 , Moscow ) - archimandrite of the Russian Orthodox Church , rector of the Solovetsky Monastery (1826-1836), local historian.

Biography

Born in a merchant family. He studied at the Riga city gymnasium.

In 1796 he arrived at the Solovetsky Monastery, a year later he was identified as a monastery worker . He took monastic tonsure in 1799.

In April 1823 he was elevated to the rank of hegumen by Metropolitan of Novgorod and St. Petersburg Seraphim (Glagolevsky) and was appointed rector of the Kirillov Novgorod monastery.

In 1826 he was appointed rector of the Solovetsky Monastery with the elevation of Archimandrite to the rank of [1] .

Under Dosifei, significant construction work was carried out, movable and immovable property was acquired for admission to the monastery of pilgrims. The delivery of government mail was organized from Kemi with him.

On January 24, 1830, “ for diligence and care for the post, ” the Russian Emperor Nicholas I awarded Father Dosifey the Order of St. Anne of the 2nd degree [2] .

He was a widely educated person. Cared a lot about the monastery library. In 1834, he transferred over 1,000 manuscripts and 2,532 printed books to the library. He collected information on the history of the North. Based on the materials of the monastery’s archive and library, he published, as amended, “The Chronicler of Solovetsky” (1833), wrote a story about the desert-creators of the Solovetsky island, and copied acts and letters from the monastery’s archive. The most significant work of Dosifei was a three-volume description of the Solovetsky Monastery, published in 1836.

In 1836 he was transferred to the Zadonsky monastery of the Voronezh diocese.

Dismissed to rest in the Moscow Simon Monastery . Died and buried there.
