Research
Filippenko was a member of the scientific projects Supernova and HIGH-Z Supernova Search , which were involved in observing supernova stars and the accelerating Universe . As a result, the existence of dark energy was suggested, which was a major breakthrough for science in 1998 [1] .
Filippenko developed and launched robotic telescopes that search for supernovae. He is also a member of the Newcomer team of scientists using the Hubble Space Telescope to study supermassive black holes [2] [3] . Filippenko's citation index is rated as the highest among space science researchers from 1996 to 2006 [4] .
In the media
Alexey Filippenko often takes part in the popular science documentary television series Universe on the History Channel television channel.
Achievements and rewards
Filippenko was awarded the Newtonian Lacey Pierce Prize for Astronomy in 1992 and the Guggenheim Fellowship in 2000, and in 1997 the . He was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences in 2009.
He received many awards for student education, including the 2007 Richtmeyer Memorial Award , awarded annually by the American Association of Physics Teachers , and the Carl Sagan Prize for the Popularization of Science in 2004. [5]
In 2006, Filippenko was awarded the US Professor of the Year Award. [6] Students at the University of California at Berkeley recognized him as the "Best Professor" on campus nine times. [7] Filippenko won the 2010 Richard Emmons Award for Excellence in Teaching Astronomy at the College by the Pacific Astronomical Society. [8]
