Athenaeum of Youth (later “Mexican Athenaeum” ) - an association of young Mexican intellectuals, formed in 1908 .
Having arisen under the influence of the ideas of the then Minister of Education writer Justo Sierra , Athenaeum contrasted his philosophy with the ideology of positivism , which was popular in the power circles of the time of Porphyriat [1] . The members of this circle adhered to the philosophy of intuitionism , irrationalism, and similar idealistic teachings [2] .
Among the participants in the Athenaeum, writer Alfonso Reyes was especially distinguished. This circle also included Angel Sarraga , Antonio Caso , Jose Vasconcelos , Pedro Enriques Urenia , Martin Luis Guzman , Enrique Gonzalez Martinez , Julio Torri and others. [1]
The activities of the Athenaeum fell mainly on the pre-revolutionary period, in addition, its organizers were quite far from the social tasks of the Mexican revolution , but their searches were the first blow to the outdated cultural stereotypes of Porphyriat [3] . One of the objects of criticism of Athenaeum was the poetry of Mexican modernism , which played an important role in updating the metric system, but degenerated into an artsy formalism by the beginning of the 20th century [3] .
