Biography
Born May 19, 1911 in the village of Malaya Viska in Ukraine . In 1928 he graduated from 7 classes of high school. Since 1926 - an auxiliary worker at a sugar factory, then was a repair worker on the railway and an apprentice tractor operator at a sugar factory.
In the Red Army since December 1928 . In 1929 he graduated from the Leningrad Military Theoretical School of Pilots , in 1930 - the Borisoglebsk Military Aviation School of Pilots , and in 1931 - the Sevastopol Military Aviation School . Since 1931 he was an instructor pilot at the Yeisk Military School of Pilots.
Repeatedly participated in glider competitions. In October 1934, on a glider " Stalinets-2 " set an all-Union record for the duration of a flight on a two-seater glider - 24 hours and 10 minutes. October 2-3, 1935 on the glider " Stalinets-4 " set another all-Union record for the duration of flight on a single-seat glider - 38 hours and 10 minutes. These records exceeded a number of world achievements, but were not officially registered as world ones.
In the years 1937-1943 - during flight test work at the Scientific Testing Institute of Naval Aviation. He conducted state tests of the seaplanes Che-2, MBR-7, ANT-44 , Be-4 , MDR-7 and others.
In the battles of World War II from June 1941 . At first he was a pilot of the 80th separate aviation squadron of the Air Force of the Black Sea Fleet , flew on the ANT-44 bomber. Dropped bombs on military facilities in Romania , made flights to Sevastopol besieged by the enemy to transport military goods and evacuate the wounded.
In February 1943, he became assistant to the commander of the 2nd Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment of the Northern Fleet for flight training and aerial combat. He made several sorties on the fighter R-39 "Aerocobra" and Yak-1 , has repeatedly participated in air battles.
After the victory, he returned to flight test work at the Scientific and Testing Institute of Naval Aviation. May 30, 1952 lifted into the sky and subsequently tested the first jet flying boat R-1 . He conducted state tests of the Be-6 , Be-6M seaplanes, the Tu-2T torpedo bomber, the Tu-14T torpedo bomber and a number of other aircraft.
Since 1954 - on flight test work at the Tupolev Design Bureau . January 23, 1962 he took to the sky and tested a Tu-126 military aircraft. I tested the Tu-95 bomber , the Tu-114 passenger plane and their modifications. He took part in the tests of the Tu-16 jet bomber, the Tu-104 jet passenger aircraft, the Tu-116 military transport aircraft and other aircraft.
Set 42 world aviation records (5 of them - co-pilot). In 1940, there were 6 records of speed and load capacity on an ANT-44 amphibious aircraft, and then 36 speed and load records on a Tu-114 aircraft.
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of April 26, 1971, for the courage and heroism shown in testing new aircraft, Colonel Sukhomlin was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union .
In December 1973, he retired with the rank of colonel. He lived in the city of Zhukovsky .
He died on August 28, 1993 . He was buried in the village of Rodniki .
