Biography

Early years

Joseph Tumler was born on the family farm Kopf am Egg, near Montetramontan ( German Nördersberg ) in South Tyrol. The youngest of six children is Mathias Tumler and his wife Monika Tumler. Since 1889, thanks to the assistance of a priest, he attended the Franciscan gymnasium "Johanneum" in Bolzano . In 1903 he entered the Teutonic Order , to which, after a year of obedience, he, as brother Marian, made a simple vow on December 8, 1904, and an eternal vow on September 14, 1909 .

Upon completion of his theological education, the Prince Bishop, Dr. Joseph Altenweisel ordained Tumler to the priests on June 29, 1910 in the cathedral of the city of Bressanone ( German: Brixen ). From 1915 to 1916 he served as a cooperator (parish priest without managerial authority) in Postal , having passed final exams with honors as an external student, in 1916/17 he studied geography and history at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Innsbruck . He had to interrupt his studies and teach history, religion and geography at the Institute of English Maidens in Merano from 1918 to 1920, while serving in the parish of Sarentino . After that, he resumed his studies in Innsbruck 1920/21, where he received his doctorate on March 11, 1922 for the lost, unfortunately, work “Shelter for travelers in Longomozo” ( German: Das Hospiz zu Lengmoos ).

Order career

Appointed in 1923 by the vicar of St. Elizabeth (Church of the Commandment of the Teutonic Order) in Vienna, he became the second archivist of the Order and on February 1, 1925, as pro-synodal judge of the diocesan court of the Archbishopric of Vienna. From 1927 to 1931, he also participated in the marriage court of the apostolic administration of Burgenland. Since he was elected a member of the General Chapter of the Order on May 29, 1925, in 1930, by the choice of the General Chapter, Marian became the second General Advisor and in 1933 the first General Advisor. Thus, he became Deputy Grand Master.

On January 11, 1933 he took over the management of the Order of the Archives and on April 30, 1938 he was appointed Grand Master, in addition, the deputy of the Land Committee of Austria. Tumler did a great job in the archive. He systematized and registered at least 12,000 documents and completed in 1938 a fundamental historical work on the history of the Teutonic Order until 1400, which was, however, published only in 1955, after the war.

From the end of 1938, Tumler held various pastoral posts until 1943, when he became the acting chaplain of the Freezach hospital. Since the Grand Master after the Second World War was largely incapacitated, responsibility for the Order fell on his shoulders. So, in 1947 he achieved the return of the Austrian property of the Order, including the archive and treasury.

Grand Master of the Teutonic Order

After the death of the Grand Master, as Acting General Vicar, he was elected Grand Master in Lana on May 10, 1948. Two days later, he received an abbot blessing. The era of Grand Master Tumler was a time of development. The restoration of positions in Eastern Europe was a particular problem, but in 1949, it was possible to establish a brothers' convention in Darmstadt and, thus, lay the foundation for the German order province. Tumler was also one of those order leaders who participated in the Second Vatican Council .

In an attempt to modernize the Order, in 1963 he followed the call of the pope and founded a mission station in Sweden . In 1965, he won the recognition of the institute of familiars, joined by such prominent figures as Konrad Adenauer .

Recent years

Having led his flock through the turbulent times of the Cathedral and the post-conciliar period, he resigned on October 6, 1970. He spent the next 17 years of his life as priest Marian in Vienna, where he died on November 18, 1987.
