So is the fifth studio album by British rock musician Peter Gabriel , released in 1986, the musician ’s first album of the same name (the previous four had only his name, without a name). Many songs of this disc were written in a more traditional pop-key and became radio hits, while others still retain the dark, thoughtful emotion of the artist’s experimental work. In 2011, Gabriel explained: “I have experimented enough with instrumental music, and I wanted to write high-quality pop songs, albeit in my own style” [9] .

This is Gabriel's second album, produced by Daniel Lanois . Lanua became known for collaborating with Brian Eno , and producing U2 records. A year earlier, the musicians worked together on the soundtrack for the Ptah film, Lanua brought many of his own ideas to the ambient atmosphere of the material. Many compositions from So clearly show Gabriel’s interest in ethnic music , he says: “I think this album is inspired by many varieties of black music, not just soul and blues : it has things from Africa, Brazil, Cuba, Jamaica” [9] .
Some time after its release, the album was officially released in the Soviet Union by Melody under the license of Virgin , and the digital recording technology was used in the production process of the Soviet circulation of records, which was new to the local market. In addition, in 1989, the composition “Red Rain” was included in the double vinyl collection “Greenpeace Breakthrough” , intended for distribution exclusively in the Soviet Union. To promote the collection, Peter Gabriel and Sting specially came to his presentation in Moscow .
Famous producer Maxim Fadeev considers Peter Gabriel to be his teacher and every time he mentions the song “Red Rain”, which, when Fadeev heard it in the mid-80s, completely turned his mind [10] .
So is the most successful album of Gabriel’s career, he reached the top of the British chart , and became # 2 in the United States [11] [12] . In the UK, the disc was certified three times as “ platinum ”, in the United States - five times. Rolling Stone magazine ranked it 14th on its list of “100 Best Albums of the Eighties” [13] .
