Mary was the daughter of (grandson of the Byzantine Emperor John II Comnenus ) and Mary Taronitissa, who belonged to the family of Armenian rulers. Her sister Theodora was married to the Prince of Antioch, Boemund III , and brother Alexey once claimed the Byzantine throne.
When the childless King of Jerusalem, Baldwin III , died in 1162, his brother Amory, before entering the throne at the request of the Patriarch of Jerusalem, Amory de Nel, divorced Agnes de Courtenay. Since Amori needed the help of powerful neighbors to fight for Egypt, he decided to intermarry with the Byzantine court, and on August 29, 1167, Amory and Mary were married in Tire .
Amory and Mary in 1172 gave birth to a daughter, Isabella , and in 1173 - a stillborn child. In 1174, Amory passed away, bestowing Mary on her deathbed Nablus .
In 1177, Maria married Balian Ibelin , who in 1187, after the defeat of the Jerusalem army at the Battle of Hattin , turned out to be the de facto ruler of the kingdom. They had at least four children:
- Jean , senor of Beirut
- Margarita, who first married Hugo of Tiberius, and then - Voltaire Caesarea
- Philip , regent of Cyprus
Maria and Balian supported Conrad of Monferrato in his struggle for the crown against Guy de Lusignan . They got a divorce from Isabella, Maria’s daughter from her first marriage, and organized her marriage to Conrad to strengthen his claim to the throne. In 1208, Maria participated in organizing the wedding of her granddaughter Alice with the King of Cyprus Hugo I. This is the last case of her mention in the chronicles - obviously, she died before 1217.
