Words and Music

The song was recorded in 1995; it uses samples and the melody of the chorus of Stevie Wonder 's 1976 song " Pastime Paradise " from his album Songs in the Key of Life . It is one of the few Coolio songs that do not contain profanity : the author himself explained this by the fact that otherwise Wonder would not allow his music to be used [1] .

The song begins with the words from Psalm 23: 4 [2] :

As I walk through the valley of the shadow of death ...

Original text (Russian)
If I go and the valley of the shadow of death ...

Stevie Wonder gave permission to use the music from his song and, moreover, sang along with Coolio at the 1995 Billboard Music Awards [3] .
