Biography
Came from the nobles of the Livonia province . He was brought up at school, from where on June 16, 1856 he was made a cavalry guard. In 1859 he was promoted to lieutenant. From January 4, 1861 to April 26, 1863 he was a regimental treasurer.
In 1861 he was promoted to staff captain, and in 1862 to captain. From December 1, 1865 to September 8, 1866 he commanded a life squadron. In 1866 he was promoted to colonel, and in 1870 to the adjutant wing. March 17, 1872 he was appointed commander of the Akhtyr hussar regiment .
In 1876 he was promoted to major general, enlisted in the retinue of His Majesty and was appointed commander of the 2nd Brigade of the 1st Guards Cavalry Division. At this time, in 1877, G. F. Mengden purchased a house on Palace Embankment (known as the house of Fedosey Sklyaev - now the “ Reserve House of the Winter Palace ”). In addition, he had other property; So, in Finland there was an estate where a factory for the production of glass for mirror windows worked. In 1883, he was forced to sell both a house and an estate; as his daughter Zinaida later recalled: “the father innocently lost most of his fortune. This served as a serious test for our family. Parents had to give up the many benefits that wealth had hitherto given them. From now on, they were obliged to limit themselves in everything ”; Alexander III gave the family the opportunity to live in the Tauride Palace . In 1883 he was enrolled in the army cavalry.
In 1886 he was appointed commander of the 1st Brigade of the 2nd Guards Cavalry Division. In 1891 he was appointed commander of the 14th Cavalry Division and promoted to lieutenant general.
In 1895, appointed to the Minister of War. He died in 1902, was buried in Wolmar in a family crypt.

- Son - Dmitry (1873-1954), colonel of the Cavalier Guard regiment. In service since 1893, an officer since 1895. He was adjutant to the Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich, when he was his generalissimo and governor in the Caucasus. He was married (from 3.11.1896) to Countess Sofia Nikolaevna Arapova, daughter of N. U. Arapov .
- Grandson - George (5.8.1897–13.11.1983). Cornet of the Cavalry Guard regiment. He served in the Volunteer Army and the All-Union Federal League of Justice. Undercoat of the Kornilov shock regiment. Member of the Chernetsov campaign. Cavalier of the St. George Cross IV degree. He was married to Countess Irina Dmitrievna Sheremetyeva. He died in Paris and was buried in a cemetery in Sainte-Genevieve-des-Bois;
- Grandson - Nikolai (1899-1973), from 1929 he was married to Maria Nikolaevna Leuchtenberg (1907-1992), daughter of the Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich Leuchtenberg ;

- Daughter - Zinaida (11/22/1878 - 09/15/1950), (author of Memoirs ), for 1911 was a maid of honor at the court of Empress Alexandra Fedorovna ; since 1912, she held the post of retinue maid of honor of Maria Fedorovna , with whom she left Russia on the English ship Marlboro; lived in Copenhagen, where she died and was buried [1] .
