History
The history of football in Ecuador began in 1899. A resident of Guayaquil , Juan Alfredo Wright, returned from Europe and brought with him a new game, which he began to actively distribute among the local population. On April 23, 1899, the first football club called Club Sport Guayaquil was organized. Subsequently, the Club Sport Ecuador and the Club of the Workers' Association ( Club de la Asociación de Empleados ) were created. From January 28, 1900, the first matches began to be held. In 1922, amateur championships were organized in the provinces of Guayas and Pichincha , which were held until 1950 and 1953, respectively [1] .
On May 30, 1925, the National Sports Federation of Ecuador ( Federación Deportiva Nacional del Ecuador , also known as Fedenador ) was created. A year later, in 1926, the Ecuadorian Olympic Committee organized the National Olympiad in the city of Riobamba , at which football debuted as a new sport and regional teams were elected. The winner was the team of the province of Chimborazo - the mistress of the games. After the end of the competition, Ecuador applied for and was accepted into FIFA , and a year later, in 1927, joined CONMEBOL [1] .
In the 1940s, the first amateur championships were held at the national level. In 1951, the first professional regional championships were launched in the province of Guayas, and then in 1953 in the province of Pichincha. In 1957, the National Club Championships of Ecuador started, which, with the exception of 1958 and 1959, continue to this day [1] .
In 1967, the provinces of Guayas and Pichincha completed the individual regional championships. On June 30 of the same year, the National Federation was renamed the Ecuadorian Football Association ( Asociación Ecuatoriana de Fútbol ). On May 26, 1978, the Association changed its status and adopted the current name - “Ecuadorian Football Federation” ( Federación Ecuatoriana de Fútbol ) [1] .
