Song History
The song is based on the popular folk gospel song “It Must Be Jesus” (with a text by Rudolf King [5] ) performed by The Southern Tones quartet [6] . Ray Charles heard the song on the radio while on the road with his band in the fall of 1954 [3] . Together with trumpeter Renald Richard, he wrote his version of this song, providing it with secular lyrics, jazz rhythm and blues harmonies. The song became one of the prototypes of what was later called soul [3] , and is also considered one of the predecessors of the rockabilly genre [6] .
The song was recorded on November 18, 1954 [3] in the studio of the radio station WGST ( Atlanta ) and became the first hit of Ray Charles, reaching the first position on the Rhythm & Blues Records chart [3] on May 7, 1955 [2] . In his performance, the song takes 239th position in the list of 500 greatest songs of all time according to Rolling Stone magazine [7] . Ray Charles later re-recorded this song, entitled “I Gotta Woman”; the single with the new version reached the 79th position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1965.
