Hao ( Vietnamese. Hào , whale. -) is the Vietnamese variable currency , equal to 1 ⁄ 10 Vietnamese dong [1] . Currently, banknotes are not issued in hao, but in accordance with article 16 of the Law on the State Bank of Vietnam, hao is considered a bargaining unit of money [2] .

Coins
The first coins of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam with denominations in hao are dated 1946. Coins of this issue have two varieties: the number “5” on the obverse is convex or depressed [3] .
The next issue of coins in hao was made by the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in the course of the monetary reform of 1978, when money circulation in North and South Vietnam was unified. Coins of 1, 2, and 5 hao, dated 1976, were issued in circulation [4] .

Banknotes
The first banknotes with denominations in hao were issued by the Democratic Republic of Vietnam during the monetary reform of 1959. Banknotes are dated 1958 [5] .
Then notes of 1972 in 1 hao and 1975 in 2 hao were issued. The note in 1 hao was originally issued 103 * 57 mm in size, then the size of the note was reduced (without changing the figure of the note, including the date) [6] .
In the course of the monetary reform of 1978, which unified the circulation of money in North and South Vietnam, a 1976 note was issued in 5 hao [7] .
The last issue of banknotes in hao was made in the course of the monetary reform of 1985, a bill of 5 hao of the sample of 1985 was issued [8] .
