History
The race was first held in 1906. Her winner was Giovanni Gerby . Since then, the Giro del Piedmont has been held on the eve of the classic fallen leaves of the Giro di Lombardy .
Twice the competition was held as a multi-day race . In 1934, it consisted of four stages, and in 1945 - of two.
The 1951 race was fatal for Fausto Coppi's younger brother, Cerse Coppi , who retired from the race after a fall and died of a brain hemorrhage a few hours later.
In 2005, Gran Piedmont entered the UCI Europe Tour calendar, receiving the category 1.HC. In 2013-2014, the race was not held due to financial difficulties: [1] the organizers did not receive enough funding to organize two races of Milan-Turin and Gran Piedmont, so it was decided to cancel the latter. In 2017, the one-day race acted as the Italian Road Racing Championship in the group race . [2]
From the moment of its foundation until 1948, and also from 1965 to 2002, the race was organized by the main Italian sports newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport , which is also the organizer of the Giro d'Italia . In 2015, the one-day event returned to the calendar thanks to the support of RCS Sport , which became the new sponsor and organizer of the competition.
Route
The first issues of the race finished in Alessandria . In 1925, the finish was moved to Turin and remained there until 1940. In 2008, the route ran from Novi Ligure to Lagnasco and had a length of 199 km. In 2009, with a change of name, the route was also changed - the finish was moved to Fossano . In subsequent years, the race again took place along a new route: in 2010 from Cossato to Cherasco , in 2011 from Piasco to Novi Ligure, in 2012 from Fossano to Biella . The route of the jubilee hundredth issue of Gran Piedmont, which took place on September 29, 2016, crossed 6 of the 8 provinces of Piedmont (including the capital city of Turin), began in Langa , passed through Canavese , and then finished on the rise in Alice Superior .
