Biography
Sheikh Ahmad ar-Ruzeyki was born on February 18, 1938 in the village of ar-Ruzeyka in the Armant district of Luxor region in Upper Egypt .
As a teenager, Ahmad began his studies at a regular rural school. One day in 1951, he saw a crowd of his fellow villagers gather around a loudspeaker, eagerly listening to the radio reading of the Koran of the native of the same region, Sheikh 'Abdul-Basit' Abdus-Samad . People were amazed and delighted with the reading of the Sheikh. From that day on, the young man’s life changed dramatically. He left his former place of study and entered the kuttab - a religious school, where the Koran was memorized. When his father found out about this, he was extremely happy and supported him in this endeavor with all his might.
Sheikh ar-Ruzeyki learned the Quran in 3 years under the leadership of Sheikh Mahmoud Ibrahim. He then studied 10 kyraats under the guidance of the great Sheikh Muhammad Salim Hammad, the teacher of Sheikh 'Abdul-Basit .
At the age of 20, Sheikh ar-Ruzeyky entered the Music Institute, where under the guidance of renowned musician and journalist Mahmoud Kamil he studied the art of Arabic music. There he learned to sing and play 'oud .
From 1961 to 1974 Sheikh Ar-Ruzeyki lived in Luxor. In 1974, he joined the Cairo radio and became one of the famous readers of the Koran in Egypt.
In 1982, Sheikh ar-Ruzeyky was appointed a reader in the Cairo mosque "Al-Seyyida Nafisa."
Since the 1970s Sheikh ar-Ruzeyki fought for the establishment of the Union of Readers of Egypt, which was formed in 1984, and remained its chief secretary until his death in 2005.
