Biography
Born in Holstein in the family of a merchant. Around 1870, the Schwabe family moved to Geneva. Here, Carlos in 1882-1884 studied at the Industrial and Art School ( École des arts industriels ). In 1888, he received Geneva (and therefore Swiss) citizenship. After graduating from art school, in 1890 he left for Paris. In the French capital, the artist initially earns by creating patterns for wallpaper. Later it falls under the influence of symbolism, according to the criteria of which he paints and creates his own graphic works. C. Schwabe often exhibited paintings both in Paris and in Geneva, which he repeatedly visited. Already in 1891 he exhibited his works in Societe Nationale , in 1892 he created a poster for the first exhibition of the Rose + Cross Society . The artist is also one of the forerunners of the Art Nouveau style - as follows from the often used ornament of flowers, figures of angels, etc. K. Schwabe's work was influenced by the work of the Pre-Raphaelites .
C. Schwabe is also known as an illustrator of fiction, in particular the novel by E. Zola Mechta (1892), the collection of poems “ Flowers of Evil ” (1900) by Charles Baudelaire , the play “Peleas and Milisanda” by Maurice Meterlink (1892) and Albert Samena "In the Garden of the Infanta" (1908).
In 1900, C. Schwabe was awarded a gold medal at the World Exhibition in Paris . The following year, he becomes an officer in the French Legion of Honor . The artist spent the last years of his life in France. He died in the small town of Avon south of Paris.
