The Ermakovsky District was formed on June 10, 1929 as part of the Rybinsk District of the Ivanovo Industrial Region. On July 23, 1930, the Rybinsk district was abolished and the district became directly subordinate to the Ivanovo Industrial Region.
March 11, 1936 Ermakovsky district became part of the newly formed Yaroslavl region.
As of 1940, the district included 18 village councils: Bobrovsky, Bolshe-Lutoshkinsky, Varkinsky, Verkhovsky, Davshinsky, Ermakovsky, Koporyevsky, Matkomsky, Musorsky, Nikitinsky, Pelnevsky, Polenovsky, Ramensky, Roysky, Spass-Sarsky, Telepshinsky, Khmelevsky and Yagorb.
On March 8, 1941, in connection with the construction of the Rybinsk Reservoir and the flooding of most of the territory of the Ermakovsky District, it was abolished. The northern part of the region’s non-flooded territory (Verkhovsky, Musorsky, Spass-Sarsky, Telepshinsky and Khmelevsky village councils) went to Myaksinsky district of the Vologda region [1] , and the southern, including the administrative center of Gayutino, to Poshekhonsky district of the Yaroslavl region .
