Li Jing was born in 1970 in Hengyang , Hunan Province . Since 1976, he began to do gymnastics in a local amateur sports school, in 1979 he won the provincial youth championship. In 1980, he entered the Beijing Institute of Physical Education, after graduating in 1986, he joined the national team of Hunan Province, and in 1987 he joined the national team.

At the 1989 World Cup, Li Jing won the gold medal in the exercises on the uneven bars and the bronze - in the exercises on the horse and in the all-around (as well as the bronze - as part of the team). In 1990, he won 3 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medals of the Asian Games in Beijing.
