Player Career

Played as a point guard . Kervey never attended university; in 1937 he signed a contract with the Buffalo Bisons team, which played in the National Basketball League (NBL) . In 1940-1945 he served in the US Air Force. Later, he played for the teams Rochester Royals (NBL), Trenton Tigers ( ABL ) and Syracuse Nationals . In total, the NBA spent 4 seasons. Once was included in the 2nd team of all the stars of the NBA ( 1950 ). In the 1945/1946 season, Kervi in ​​the Rochester Royals became the NBL champion . Three times he joined the 1st national team of all NBL stars (1947–1949), and also once - to the 2nd national team of all NBL stars (1946). In 1947, along with George Maiken, he became the most productive player in the NBL regular season . In 1985 he was included in the Basketball Hall of Fame . Total for a career in the NBL played 187 games in which scored 2326 points (an average of 12.4 per game). Career Coach

For the past five seasons as a player, Kervey was the playing coach of his native Syracuse Nationals (1948-1953), and after completing his professional career he worked in Nationals for more than three seasons (1953-1956). During this time, he led his team three times to the NBA Finals , twice, in the 1949/1950 and 1953/1954 seasons , his club was inferior in the final series to the Minneapolis Lakers team, and only in the 1954/1955 championship did his team win the champion title by beating the Fort Wayne Pistons club in the final. At the beginning of the 1956/1957 season, after 12 games played, Kervi was dismissed from his post due to the unsatisfactory results of the team, and team captain Paul Seymour was appointed in his place. Two years later, he changed his residence permit, going to the Philadelphia Warriors Club and worked there for only one year as head coach (1958-1959). After the end of the first season of his coaching career at Nationals, in 1949, Kervi was named NBL coach of the year . In 1960, he refused to enter into a contract with the Los Angeles Lakers team because his wife was against a distant move.

Twice he was appointed as the head coach of the NBA all-star match to the East team (1952, 1955).

Death

Al Kervey died on November 9, 2009 in Rochester , New York , at the age of 92.
