Description

Appearance and structure

The body length of an adult harmful centipede is 20-24 mm, the body color is gray. The larva is 30–35 mm long; it has no limbs and has a cylindrical shape. Egg up to 1 mm, oval, black, shiny.

Nutrition

Larvae feed on roots and dead parts of plants.

Reproduction and development

Harmful centipedes give one generation a year. Eggs are laid in the ground. Larvae lead an underground lifestyle and winter in the soil. In spring, young plants gnaw on roots, stems and leaves closest to the ground, causing severe thinning of crops.

Range

It is found in North America and Eurasia . On the territory of the former USSR it is found everywhere.

Harmful Centipede and Man

In the territory of the former USSR, this insect damages mainly flax in moist areas of the European part, especially on peaty soils. To a lesser extent, hemp , peas , potatoes , corn , barley , oats , buckwheat and various vegetables are damaged.

Insecticides , drainage of wetlands, deep autumn plowing and poisoned bait are used to combat harmful centipedes.
