Mountain range 17 kilometers long and 550 meters high above sea level is the most northeastern part of Samaria and the southern border of the Jezreel Valley. Here the borders of the three tribes converged - Issakhar , Zvulun and Menashe . The mountain is associated with the name of King Saul (Shaul), who fought and died here along with his sons, including Jonathan , a friend of David , the future king of Israel. The bodies of the dead were exhibited by the Philistines on the city walls of Beit Shean . All surrounding Jewish settlements are named after the children of King Saul, for example, the kibbutz Merav. Here, the prophetess Deborah (the Court) preached and inspired the military feat of the commander Varak (Barak).
Every year, in early spring, purple Iris Gilboa blossoms on the mountain ( lat.Iris haynei ).
