On June 27, 1998, Pope John Paul II appointed Philip Huang Zhaoming as auxiliary bishop of the Kaohsiung diocese and titular bishop of Lamfua . On September 26, 1998, Philip Huang Zhaoming was ordained bishop by Cardinal Pavel Shan Gosi , accompanied by the Archbishop of Taipei, Joseph Di Gang, and the auxiliary Bishop of Kaohsiung, Bosco Lin Jinan .
