Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Rock Performance

The Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Rock Performance was awarded between 1980 and 2011. In 2012, after a total revision of the Grammy categories, the nomination was abolished, now it is awarded as unified - “The Best Rock Performance” . The award was given to vocalists for the work they did (song or album), containing high-quality vocal performance in the genre of rock music. Every year, the US National Academy of Art and Science of Recording selected several candidates for “artistic achievements, technical mastery and a significant contribution to the development of sound recording without taking into account the album (single) sales and its position in the charts” [1] .

The first winner in this nomination was Paul McCartney with the group Wings for the composition “ Rockestra Theme , He was awarded at the 22nd Grammy Awards . From 1986 to 1989, the category was known as “Best instrumental rock performance (orchestra, band or solo)” . According to the description in the brochure of the 52nd Grammy ceremony , the award is presented to musicians “for new instrumental recordings in the genres: rock , hard rock or metal ” [2] .

Jeff Beck leads the number of wins, only six times. Sting received three awards, two in the group The Police . Twice the nomination won: Eric Clapton , Carlos Santana (once as a member of the group "Santana"), The Flaming Lips , Steve Vai , and the brothers Jimmy Vaughn and Stevie Ray Von (each time in the duet "Vaughan Brothers"). At the 51st Grammy Ceremony, the project Zappa Plays Zappa (led by Frank Zappa's son - Dwizil ) received a statuette for the performance of Frank's instrumental composition “Peaches en Regalia” [3] . Both father and son were both nominated several times and even competed with each other in 1988. Joe Satriani is the leader in the number of nominations without wins - fourteen times.

In 2012, the nomination was abolished due to the total restructuring of the Grammy categories, it was transferred to a new, single category - “The Best Rock Performance” . Thus, the song "Hammerhead" was the last winner in this category.

The nominees were works published in the previous calendar year regarding the current Grammy ceremony.
