According to various estimates, in Niger there are from 8 to 20 indigenous languages. The mismatch comes from the fact that several languages are closely related to others, and can be grouped or considered separately.
French, inherited from the colonial period, is the official language. It is mainly spoken as a second language by people with education. Although educated Nigerians still make up a smaller part of the population, French is spoken in government (courts, government, etc.), in the media community and in business.
The usual classification of languages Niger mentions eight national languages: Arabic spoken , gourmet, kanuri , Songai , tamashek , tubu (tebu), fula , hausa .
