The official language of Sao Tome and Principe is Portuguese , which is more or less owned by 95% of the population, mainly as a second.
The main spoken language is the Lower Guinean Creole language (based on Portuguese), three dialects of which are represented mainly in this country:
- Forru (San Tomian dialect; Forro, Sãotomense) - the main language of the population about. Sao Tome , 130 thousand, 85% of the country's population;
- Angolar (Ngola; Angolar, Ngola, N'góla) - distributed in the south of Fr. Sao Tome (9 thousand) among the descendants of slaves from Angola; 3%;
- Principe dialect (Principense, Lunguyê) - about. Principe (approx. 4500 people).
The Lower Guinean language does not have a standard spelling norm, in everyday life writing is oriented towards Portuguese spelling.
French is also taught at school, as this state is adjacent to the French-speaking countries and is a member of the Francophonie .
