Klaus Thomsen ( Dat. Claus Thomsen ; born April 10, 1970 in Aarhus , Denmark ) is a former Danish footballer , a midfielder known for playing for Aarhus , Everton and the Danish national team . Member of the 1996 European Championships as well as the Summer Olympic Games in Barcelona .

Club career

Thomsen was born in Aarhus and began his career at a local club . In 1989, Klaus was called up to the youth team of Denmark , where he played as a central defender. In 1990, he was elected captain of the youth team. In the same year, Thomsen extended his contract with Aarhus, rejecting the offers of Brondby and B-1903 . In November 1991, the Scottish Celtic made a proposal regarding the transition of Klaus, but the deal fell through. In 1992, Thomsen won his only trophy - the Danish Cup .

In 1994, Klaus transferred to the English Ipswich Town . The transfer amount was £ 250 thousand. For the new club, he spent 97 matches and scored 8 goals. Thomsen became the team leader and, after three seasons, was sold for £ 900,000 at Everton . On April 16, 1997, in the Merseyside derby against Liverpool , he scored in his own net and became one of the meeting's antiheroes.

In 1998, he left England and returned to his homeland, signing a contract with AB . After playing for the new club for six months, Thomsen moved to the German Wolfsburg . In Germany, Klaus received very little playing time due to a large number of injuries. In April 2002, he completed his career as a football player.

International Career

In 1992, Thomsen took part in the Barcelona Summer Olympics . At the tournament, he was the team captain, took part in all three matches and became the author of the only goal against the Mexican team [1] .

In September 1995, Thomsen made his debut for the Danish national team . In 1996, Klaus was included in the application for participation in the European Championship in England .
