Nikolai Dementiev was born in a family of intellectuals. In the 1920s, he studied at the V. Ya. Bryusov Literary and Art Institute , and graduated from the literary department of Moscow State University . Married to his classmate Nadezhda Adolf . He was a member of the literary group "Pass". Published in Krasnaya Novi, Komsomolskaya Pravda , Young Guard , New World , October . 4 collections of poems have been released. The poem of his friend Eduard Bagritsky “ Conversation with the Komsomol N. Dementiev ” (1927) is also known.

He graduated from courses at the Central Institute of Labor, worked as a locksmith in the construction of the Bobrikovsky Chemical Plant , where he also worked as a journalist and created popular science books.

He was detained while trying to commit suicide in a hotel for foreigners (he later told his wife that he thought that the city was captured by the Nazis and did not want to surrender to them alive), was placed in the Kashchenko psychiatric hospital . Then he was discharged from the hospital, but his mental condition worsened. [one]

October 28, 1935 committed suicide by throwing himself from the balcony of the 6th floor. He was buried at the Novodevichy cemetery . On his death, Boris Pasternak wrote a poem "To the untimely dead."
