Biography

Prokofiy Kornienko was born in 1911 in the village of Rostovka (now the Bukhar-Zhyrau district of the Karaganda region of Kazakhstan ). Ukrainian [1] . After finishing seven classes of the school, he worked as a miner, then, after graduating from commodity courses, he worked in Karaganda trade. In 1942, Kornienko was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. Since March 1943 - on the fronts of World War II, he was a reconnaissance platoon reconnaissance of the 847th Infantry Regiment of the 303rd Infantry Division of the 57th Army of the Steppe Front . He distinguished himself during the battle of the Dnieper [2] .

On the night of September 26-27, 1943, Kornienko crossed the Dnieper near the village of Chervonoe (now within the boundaries of the village of Verkhnedneprovsk of the Dnepropetrovsk region of the Ukrainian SSR ) and destroyed the enemy machine-gun point, which prevented the crossing. Kornienko took an active part in the battles for the capture and retention of the bridgehead on the west bank of the Dnieper [2] .

By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated December 20, 1943, Red Army soldier Prokofiy Kornienko was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the awarding of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal [2] .

After the war, the rank of foreman Kornienko was demobilized. He lived in the village of Tokarevka, Telman region , worked as chairman of the village council. He died on June 10, 1972, was buried in the village named after May 1, Telman district [2] .

He was also awarded a number of medals [2] .

Streets in Rostovka and Tokarevka [2] , a secondary school in the village of Topar are named after Kornienko.
