Biography
Little is known about Herrera's life. Came from the family of a Seville priest. He was fluent in Latin , Greek and Jewish . Most of his creative heritage was lost in the fire that occurred after his death. Only part of his writings was published during his lifetime, the posthumous edition of the surviving poetic works entitled Versos took place in 1619 thanks to his friend artist Francisco Pacheco .
The poet's lyrical heritage includes canzons , elegy, and odes . Especially famous were his odes on the occasion of the victory at the Battle of Lepanto ( A la victoria de Lepanto ) and the death of King Sebastian of Portugal at the Battle of El Ksar el-Kebir ( A la pérdida del rey Don Sebastián ). Herrera's poetic talent was praised by Lope de Vega and Cervantes , who wrote a sonnet in his honor. Herrera also studied history and wrote two works on the battle of Lepanto and Thomas More . Herrera also published poems by the Spanish commander Garcilaso de la Vega, "Comments on Garcilaso" ( Anotaciones a las obras de Garcilaso , 1580).
