Biography

Ivan Sergeyevich Pukhov was born on September 15, 1915 in the village of Pravokumskoye in the Svyatokrestovsky district of the Stavropol province of the Russian Empire (now the village of the Levokumsky district of the Stavropol Territory of the Russian Federation ) in a peasant family. Russian . Education 7 classes. Prior to conscription, he worked at a machine and tractor station .

In the ranks of the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army, I. S. Pukhov was called up by the Levokumsky district military registration and enlistment office of the Ordzhonikidze krai [1] in 1937. He served in the Far East . In July - August 1938 he took part in an armed conflict near Lake Hassan . At the end of military service, Ivan Sergeyevich decided to continue his service in the army. The beginning of World War II caught him in the Far East, where he served in the Far Eastern Front . In the summer of 1943, I. S. Pukhov graduated from the artillery school and was assigned to the 386th anti-tank artillery regiment, the formation of which was completed in the Reserve of the High Command . In battles with the Nazi invaders, lieutenant I. S. Pukhov on September 9, 1943 on the Voronezh Front (October 1 , 1943 - the 1st Ukrainian Front ) as commander of the 1st battery of the 386th fighter-anti-tank artillery regiment RGK, attached to the 9th mechanized corps of the 3rd Guards Tank Army . In the fall of 1943, Ivan Sergeyevich took part in the Sumy-Pryluk front-line operation of the Battle of the Dnieper , as part of his unit liberated the Left-Bank Ukraine , forced the Dnieper , fought on the Bukrinsky bridgehead . At the end of October 1943, the 3rd Guards Tank Army was secretly transferred to the Lyutezhsky bridgehead , from where, on November 3, 1943, it went on the offensive as part of the Kiev offensive operation . Junior Lieutenant I.S. Pukhov with his battery was directly involved in the battles for the capital of the Ukrainian SSR, the city of Kiev . Ivan Sergeevich was especially distinguished in the Kiev defensive operation when repelling the enemy’s counterattack near the city of Fastov .

In an effort to restore the line of defense along the Dnieper, the German command inflicted a number of powerful counterattacks on the stretched communications of the 1st Ukrainian Front in Right-Bank Ukraine . At dawn on November 10, 1943, the positions of Soviet troops on the southwestern outskirts of the city of Fastov were attacked by large German infantry forces with the support of more than 30 tanks. The 1st battery of the 386th anti-tank fighter artillery regiment, under the command of junior lieutenant I.S. Pukhov, held positions at an altitude of 225.5. Ivan Sergeyevich was able to competently organize anti-tank defense, and during a fierce battle, his battery knocked out 3 and burned 8 enemy tanks, destroyed 3 vehicles with ammunition and destroyed the enemy infantry to the company. During the battle, the gunner and commander of one of the guns went out of order. Then I.S. Pukhov himself got up to the cannon and personally shot down two enemy tanks (1 T-VI and 1 T-IV ) from a distance of 50-60 meters. When the infantry faltered and the infantry began to retreat under the pressure of the enemy, the artillerymen of Pukhov continued to firmly hold their positions. Junior Lieutenant I.S. Pukhov managed to gather a group of 30 soldiers near him and, organizing the defense, repelled the attack of German submachine gunners, inflicting heavy damage on the enemy. For the exemplary performance of the combat missions of the command on the front of the fight against the German invaders and the courage and heroism shown by the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of February 9, 1944, junior lieutenant Pukhov Ivan Sergeyevich was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.

In contrast to the battles near Kiev, the 386th anti-tank artillery regiment was transformed into the 108th Guards. In its composition, Ivan Sergeevich participated in the liberation of Right-Bank Ukraine ( Proskurovsky-Chernivtsi operation ). By the summer of 1944 he was awarded the title of Lieutenant Guard. His battery again excelled in the Lviv-Sandomierz operation . On July 16, 1944, units of the 3rd Guards Tank Army were introduced into the breakthrough through the Koltuv corridor. On July 17, the battery of Lieutenant I.S. Pukhov’s guard was one of the first to break into the Krasnoye station, from where the enemy hastily tried to take out military equipment. Under the cover of an armored train, the Germans were preparing to send 3 echelons. Having deployed the battery, Ivan Sergeyevich entered an artillery duel with an armored train and silenced him. The gunners also disabled the engine and set fire to 8 cars. As a result of the battery’s actions, not one of the echelons could leave the Krasnoe station. On July 19, the enemy, with large infantry and tank forces, launched a counterattack near the village of Dzibulka . Pulling out the guns for direct fire, the guards lieutenant I. S. Pukhov set fire to 2 Tigers with a battery fire and knocked out 2 medium tanks, scattered and partially destroyed the enemy infantry company, thereby contributing to repelling the enemy’s onslaught. Having completed the rout of the Nazi troops in Western Ukraine , the troops of the 1st Ukrainian Front entered Poland . At the beginning of August 1944, units of the 3rd Guards Tank Army crossed to Sandomierz bridgehead . In the battles for the expansion of the bridgehead on August 5, 1944, in the vicinity of the village of Zhokhuv, the battery of the guard of lieutenant I.S. Pukhov repelled an enemy counterattack, which attempted to break into the defense of the Soviet troops, destroying 1 medium tank, 3 armored personnel carriers and up to 100 Wehrmacht troops. In the course of further battles on the left bank of the Vistula, the battery of I.S. Pukhov was repeatedly sent to the most dangerous areas and invariably inflicted great damage on the Germans in manpower and equipment. So, in the second half of August 1944, the enemy for four days tried to break through the defenses of the Soviet troops, persistently throwing large forces of motorized infantry and tanks into battle. On August 22, at the most difficult defense site near the village of Sobutka-Shlyakhetska, the Pukhov battery entered battle. In a fierce battle for many hours, Ivan Sergeyevich with his fighters did not retreat a single step. The enemy, having lost 3 tanks, 2 armored personnel carriers and up to 300 soldiers and officers, was forced to refuse to continue active operations in this sector.

The 3rd Guards Tank Army fought on the Sandomierz bridgehead until September 7, 1944, after which it was withdrawn to the reserve of the Headquarters of the Supreme High Command . The 9th mechanized corps was reinforced by a tank brigade and two self-propelled artillery regiments, and the 108th Guards Fighter Anti-Tank Regiment was disbanded. Ivan Sergeyevich was sent to the 31st Artillery Breakthrough Division of the 10th Artillery Breakthrough Corps formed in the Reserve of the High Command, where he took command of the battery of the 1920th Howitzer Artillery Regiment of the 191st Howitzer Artillery Brigade. Until January 1945, the division was engaged in intense combat training, after which it was introduced to the Sandomierz bridgehead. At this time, I. S. Pukhov received the rank of senior lieutenant.

On January 12, 1945, during the 107-minute artillery preparation, which announced the start of the Sandomierz-Silesian offensive operation , Ivan Sergeevich was the senior in the firing positions of the 2nd division of his brigade. Due to the proper organization of the combat work of the division, he managed to create the necessary density of fire at his site in the vicinity of the settlement of Staszow and ensured the breakthrough of the enemy’s defense. Having fought from the Vistula to the Oder , the guards, Senior Lieutenant I.S. Pukhov provided fire to the attacking rifle units with the fire of his guns, participated in the breakthrough of seven German defense lines, liberated the city of Krakow , forced the rivers Nida , Shrenyava , Przemša and Oder. In February 1945, he took part in an operation to encircle a group of Nazi troops in the Breslau region. In the battles for the city, Ivan Sergeyevich was seriously wounded. He spent about eight months in hospitals, lost his leg. In the winter of 1946, he was fired from the army for disability. He lived and worked in the city of Kislovodsk, Stavropol Territory. He died on May 17, 1983. He was buried in Kislovodsk.
