Gursel, Nedim

He grew up in Balikesir , was raised by his grandfather. He graduated from the elite Galatasarai Lyceum in Istanbul ( 1970 ). Early began to be printed in periodicals. He came to Paris to study at the Sorbonne , defended a diploma in the work of Nazim Hikmet and Louis Aragon ( 1979 ). Because of the coup d'etat ( 1980 ), he stayed in France for another three years. Subsequently, he divided life between Paris, where he taught Turkish literature at the Sorbonne and the National Institute of Languages ​​and Civilizations of the East (INALCO), and Istanbul. Since 1982 - employee of CNRS , head of research of Turkish literature.

The author of novels, short stories, essays, diaries, travel notes and other prose, translated into French and many other European languages. Part of his books was banned at home, subjected to severe censorship, in several cases (after the release of the novel The Daughters of Allah , etc.) the writer was threatened with imprisonment.
