Youth and the beginning of service

Ivan Korzunov was born on May 3, 1915 in Yekaterinoslav (now the Dnieper ). He graduated from the Prudkovskaya seven-year school in 1931. He studied at the labor faculty , worked at a sawmill in Moscow . He studied at the faculty of Moscow Engineering and Economics Institute .

In October 1934, I. Korzunov was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . In 1936, he graduated from the Military School of Marine Pilots and Observer Pilots named after I.V. Stalin in Yeysk . From November 1936 he served as a pilot of the 45th high-speed bomber aviation squadron of the 7th high-speed bomber aviation brigade of the Black Sea Fleet Air Force, from April 1938 he was a senior pilot of the 40th light-bomber aviation regiment in the same place, in May 1941 he was appointed flight commander. Member of the CPSU (b) since 1939.

World War II

From the first day of World War II - on its fronts. He participated in the defense of Odessa and Sevastopol , in the battle for the Caucasus [1] . In July 1941, he flew to bomb Ploesti oil fields , gaining direct hits in factory buildings, in August 1941, he bombed the main Romanian naval base of Constanta and participated in the destruction of the railway bridge in Chernivody. He fought in the squadron of Hero of the Soviet Union Alexander Tsurtsumiy . In May 1942, Major Ivan Korzunov was appointed commander of a squadron of diving bombers of the 40th Bomber Aviation Regiment of the 63rd Bomber Air Force Brigade of the Black Sea Fleet. By April 1943, he had made 191 sorties to bombard important enemy targets in his deep rear [1] .

By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of July 24, 1943, for "successful command of the squadron, heroism and courage shown in the struggle against the German invaders," Major Ivan Korzunov was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal number 1049 [1] .

In May 1043, he became assistant regiment commander for flight training and aerial combat, and in August 1943 I.E. Korzunov commanded the 40th light bomber aviation regiment. The regiment under his command sank 16 transports, 1 tanker, 1 minesweeper, 77 small warships and boats, 37 barges and other enemy ships, shot down 6 aircraft in the air, destroyed a large number of armored vehicles, port facilities and other objects. Since March 1944 - commander of the 13th aviation division of dive bombers of the Black Sea Fleet Air Force. The division worked perfectly during the Crimean offensive operation in April — May 1944, for which it received the honorary name “Sevastopol”. During this operation alone, the pilots of the division sank 11 transports, 1 tanker, 7 high-speed landing barges, 1 dry cargo ship, damaged 7 transports, 1 destroyer, 5 airborne infantry regiment, and shot down 12 aircraft.

During the war years, he made 254 sorties, sinking 25 enemy ships, was wounded [2] . He fought on airplanes R-5 , R-6 , SB , Pe-2 . In August 1945, he was presented with the title of twice Hero of the Soviet Union [3] , but the award was changed to the Order of Nakhimov .

Post-war time

After the war, Korzunov continued his service in the Navy , until December 1945 he commanded the same division. In 1946 he graduated from the academic courses of the officer corps of the Air Force and Air Defense at the Naval Academy . Since November 1947 - commander of the 88th aviation division of dive bombers of the Black Sea Fleet Air Force. From July 1950 to July 1953 - commander of the 105th air corps of the Air Force of the 5th Navy ( Pacific Ocean ). Then he went to study at the academy.

In 1955 he graduated from the Higher Military Academy named after K. E. Voroshilov . In February 1956, Korzunov was appointed commander of the air forces of the Northern Fleet , and in March 1966 - deputy commander of aviation of the Navy of the USSR . Suddenly died on October 29, 1966 . He was buried at the Novodevichy cemetery in Moscow [1] .

  • In honor of I.E. Korzunov, a vessel of the USSR Ministry of Fisheries was named.
