Biography

Joseph Naumovich Shapiro was born in Minsk in the Jewish family of Nevakh Movshovich Shapiro. In addition to Joseph, the family had 8 more children, six sons and two daughters. His two brothers were also doctors, one of them, Moses Naumovich Shapiro Traumatologist, Deputy People's Commissar of Health of the Kyrgyz SSR . The Soviet cameraman Evgeny Shapiro was his nephew, the son of his brother Benjamin [1] .

He received his medical education at the medical faculty of the University of Munich (1908-1918), where he graduated with a doctorate in medicine. He worked in the clinic of the German urologist James Israel [2] . After returning to Russia, he worked in the urology department of the Obukhov hospital in St. Petersburg, under the direction of Boris Nikolayevich Holtsov [3] .

At the invitation of Holtsov, from 1925 he taught at the State Institute of Medical Knowledge (now North-West State Medical University named after I. I. Mechnikov , privat-docent (1930) [2] .

After the start of World War II, Shapiro was appointed a urologist consultant on the Northern Front , worked as the chief surgeon of the evacuation hospitals of the Kirov region, and in 1942-1945 he was deputy chief surgeon and chief urologist of the evacuation hospitals of the People's Commissariat of the RSFSR [2] .

Professor Joseph Naumovich Shapiro died in 1961, was buried at the Transfiguration Jewish cemetery in St. Petersburg [4] .
