Biography

He graduated from Martuni High School with honors in Armenian (1944) and Azerbaijan State University , Department of Physics and Mathematics (1950). From 1950 to 1953 he studied at graduate school at the Geophysical Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences . In 1953 he defended his thesis on the topic: “Calculation of stationary wind currents in the ocean” (supervisor I.A. Kibel).

In 1953 he defended the dissertation of the candidate of physical and mathematical sciences "Calculation of stationary wind currents in the ocean" (scientific adviser I. A. Kibel ), and in 1967 - the dissertation of the doctor of physical and mathematical sciences "Theory and calculation of currents in the ocean." December 29, 1981 was elected a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences in the Department of Oceanology, Atmospheric Physics and Geography; On June 11, 1992 he was elected an academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences - Department of Oceanology, Atmospheric Physics and Geography (Oceanology).

In 1965-1969 he worked in Sevastopol at the Institute of Marine Hydrophysics of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, in 1969-1982. - at the Institute of Oceanology of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR , was the head of the laboratory of hydrology, dynamics of sea currents. Since 1982, he has been the chief researcher at the Institute of Computational Mathematics, Russian Academy of Sciences .

Doctor of physico-mathematical sciences (1967): topic “Theory and calculation of currents in the ocean”, professor (1968). Honorary Professor of Moscow State University .

Over the years, he taught at the Department of Mathematical Modeling of Physical Processes of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology . He was a professor at Moscow State University. M.V. Lomonosov.

Since 1995 - professor at the Department of Oceanology, Faculty of Geography, Moscow State University [3] .

He led a group of scientists (40 academicians, corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Sciences and professors), who, on the instructions of the President of the Russian Federation, compiled the program “Exploration of the World Ocean”.

He was elected first vice president of the International Association of Physical Sciences about the Ocean (IAFNO - ). He was deputy editor-in-chief of the journal Izvestia RAN.

As a scientific adviser, he prepared 28 candidates and 6 doctors of sciences.

Scientific activity

Specialist in the theory and numerical methods of calculating the currents of the oceans, modeling of thermohydrodynamic processes in the seas and oceans, climatic characteristics of the oceans and seas. He was engaged in research and development of models of hydrodynamic processes of synoptic scale in the Black, Caspian, Barents and White Seas. For the first time in world oceanological science, he formulated a statement on the decisive influence of baroclinic effects on the formation of large-scale circulation of the oceans. He established the factor of variability of dynamic processes in the ocean, which he called the joint effect of baroclinicity and bottom topography (SEBIR), which is a joint effect of heat transfer between the ocean and the atmosphere and topography. Within the framework of the state scientific program "Sections", under his leadership, work was carried out on a comparative analysis of all the numerical models of the general circulation of the ocean that existed in the USSR at that time, which served as an incentive for their further improvement.
