Story

On a stellar date 3113.2, an Enterprise Federation starship under the command of James Tiberius Kirk falls into a temporary anomaly and moves in time and space. The ship is near the planet Earth in 1969. The spaceship finds itself in dense layers of the atmosphere and is spotted by the US Air Force on radars. Having taken the Enterprise as a UFO , the Air Force sends an F-104 fighter-interceptor piloted by captain John Christopher to it. Having caught up with a star ship, the captain transmits by radio that he sees a flying object of an unusual shape and, apparently, an alien origin. From headquarters, he is ordered to attack a UFO if he tries to fly into outer space.

After the jump in time, Enterprise has depleted energy reserves and is having difficulty managing to gain altitude. Spock warns Captain Kirk that nuclear warheads could be installed on the aircraft chasing them, capable of causing significant damage to the starship. Kirk decides to capture the jet plane with a traction beam, but the design of the machine does not stand up and the plane begins to fall apart in the air. To save the pilot, they teleport him to the Enterprise. Captain John Christopher is shocked by the ship of the future and is surprised that his team consists of people like him and speaks English. Captain James Kirk escorts him to the bridge and talks about his ship and how it moved into the past for three hundred years along the way. According to Kirk, the Enterprise is one of 12 starships of this type.

Spock is worried that Christopher has learned and seen so much. According to him, now that the pilot will return home, he will have to report to the command about everything he knows, and this in itself can change the course of history and then the Enterprise may simply disappear, since it may never will build. Kirk accepts the logical conclusion of the first mate and decides to leave John Christopher on the ship, especially since Spock checked the on-board computer, which did not contain information about any contribution to the history of Captain Christopher. John begins to protest when he learns about his intentions to leave him on a spaceship and to separate him from his wife and daughters forever. Soon, Spock finds in his computer information about the yet-unborn son of Christopher, who in the future will play an important role in the development of Saturn . It becomes clear to the crew that Christopher must be returned to Earth in order not to change the course of history, but the question still remains about the disclosure of information about the Enterprise by Captain Christopher, who is obliged to tell everything to the command.

Upon learning that photo and video equipment was installed on board the F-104, the ship decides to equip the landing force on the planet in order to steal this data. Kirk and Sulu teleport to forbidden military territory and find the tapes, but after that they are discovered and Kirk is taken into custody. Sulu manages to teleport to the ship. When Spock tries to contact the captain through a communicator , the military interrogator Kirk accidentally activates an alarm on the device and is immediately teleported onto the ship. Seeing whom they teleported on a spaceship, they decide not to let the military go beyond the teleportation, so that he does not learn much about the ship of the future. To rescue Kirk, a new landing force is being formed at the Enterprise, which includes Spock, Sulu, and Christopher, who knows the location of the premises. After Kirk manages to rescue, Christopher grabs the gun of one of the guards and, threatening them, demands to leave him on Earth. Spock, sneaking up behind, paralyzes him with one of his Vulcan abilities.

After returning to the ship, Spock and chief engineer Scott find a hypothetical opportunity to return in due time. A maneuver involves passing a ship close to the sun . If everything works out, then the chronometer will begin to move in the opposite direction. The danger is that you can skip your time and get into another time era. When time begins to reverse, Captain Christopher and a randomly captured military teleport at the moment when the plane flew up to the Enterprise. The spaceship suddenly disappears in front of the pilot and he transmits by radio that he saw a UFO. The military is transferred to the military base a few minutes before the clash with Kirk and Sulu. Enterprise successfully returns to the XXIII century .

Creation

  • Initially, the episode was conceived as the second part of the episode “ Time to Nudge, ” but later the scripts were revised and the series became independent.
  • Assistant producer Robert Justman developed the original idea for the episode and gave it back to Dorothy Fontane, for which he received no material reward. However, agent Gene Roddenberry requested $ 3,000 from the studio for this rewritten script [3] .

Reviews

Zach Handlen from The AV Club rated this episode "B-", describing it with the words "so-so" and "get off" [4] .

Remastering

This episode, like everyone else, was remastered in 2006 in honor of the fortieth anniversary of the original series. The updated version was shown on May 5, 2007. In addition to standard improvements in video and audio, as well as the fully computer model of the Enterprise, the changes in this episode have undergone:

  • The appearance of the Earth was replaced by a more realistic one, clouds and the Moon were added. Michael Okuda said in an interview that many of the images used in remastering were taken from the space shuttle and the ISS [5] .
  • The scenes from the F-104 have been improved. Footage appeared overlooking the Enterprise from the cockpit.
  • When viewed from the rear view camera, when the ship moves away from the ground, gondola engines are visible on the sides.
  • The chronometer has been updated and received a digital display. The chronometer was replaced, as in the case of the remastering of the episode " Time to strip ."
  • Temporary Slingshot is shown in more detail, similar to the one in Star Trek 4: Journey Home .
  • A computer model of the Sun, more realistic than the original.
