Biography

Nichols was born in Tremont on June 21, 1831. During the Civil War, he served first under the command of General John Fremont , then under the command of General William Sherman . In 1865, he published a book about the Sherman march to the sea , in which he himself participated. The book has been translated into several languages.

In September 1865, Nichols arrived in Springfield (Missouri), where he met James Hickock, nicknamed Wild Bill. Nichols' article “Wild Bill” appeared in Harper's New Monthly Magazine in February 1867. This publication made Wild Bill famous throughout the country [2] [3] and immortalized his name [4] . The Missouri and Kansas newspapers criticized Nichols for exaggerating the feats of Wild Bill.

Nichols later settled in Cincinnati, where he became head of the College of Music. From 1868 until his death, he was married to Maria Longworth , the couple had two children - Joseph and Margaret. Nichols died on September 15, 1885 from tuberculosis .
