Biography
He studied violin mastery at the Zurich Conservatory ( 1947 - 1949 ) and there, until 1955 , theory and composition was taught by Stefi Geyer and Willy Burckhard . In 1955 - 1956 he studied in Berlin with Boris Blacher .
In 1959, he received international recognition after his chamber descript “Des Engels Anredung an die Seele” performed at the SIMC festival in Rome . From 1964 to 1973 he taught composition at the Basel Academy of Music. In 1966, 1968 and 1972 he was appointed as a jury member of the International Competition for Composers "Gaudeamus" in , Netherlands . In 1969 he founded the international composer's workshop in Bosville (Switzerland). From 1973 to 1990 he headed the composer department of the Freiburg High School of Music . From 1979 to 1982 - President of the Swiss Association of Musicians. Since 1990 - continued teaching in various educational institutions as a visiting professor [1] .
The last 30 years of his life he lived mainly in Panicale (Italy), alternating with his stay in Bremen [1] .
Creativity
He experienced the deep impact of Anton Webern and his version of serialism , and later, in the 1980s, of Arabic music.

Pedagogical activity
He taught violin art at the Zurich Conservatory ( 1950–1960 ), music history at the Lucerne Conservatory (1960–1963), theory, composition, and instrumentation at the Basel Academy of Music (since 1964 ). Professor of composition at the Freiburg High School of Music ( 1973 - 1990 ).
Among his students are Brian Fernichou , Kaya Saariakho , Wolfgang Rome , Michael Jarrerel , Pak-Paan Yon Hee , Tosio Hosokawa , Dieter Mak and many others.
