Biography

Vasily Kopylov was born on January 29, 1905 in the village of Kalikino (now the Veliky Ustyug District of the Vologda Region ). He studied at the Moscow Forestry Engineering Institute , after which he first worked at the plant in Veliky Ustyug, then became the head of the forest station. In 1927 - 1929 he served in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. In 1939, Kopylov was again drafted into the army, participated in the battles of the Soviet-Finnish war , after its end he was demobilized. In 1941, he was called up for the third time in service. Since the beginning of World War II - on its fronts. In 1942, Kopylov graduated from advanced training courses for command personnel. By May 1945, Captain Vasily Kopylov commanded a company of the 1072th Infantry Regiment of the 313th Infantry Division of the 19th Army of the 2nd Belorussian Front . Distinguished during the liberation of Poland [2] .

On May 2, 1945, Kopylov’s company crossed the Dzivna Strait north of the city of Wolin . In the battle, Kopylov personally destroyed 2 enemy machine guns with calculations, was wounded and, while continuing to fight, was killed. He was buried in a mass grave on the island of Wolin near the village of Kertentin [2] .

By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of May 15, 1946, Captain Vasily Kopylov was posthumously awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union . He was also awarded the Order of Lenin and World War 1 degree [2] .
