In Antiquity, on this place was the temple of Marcus Aurelius , in the Middle Ages, the land was cleared for the Ludovisi family from Bologna , and in 1659 the Wedekind palace was erected. Here was the residence of the chief director of the postal service of the Papal States , who moved here in 1814 . The palace was rebuilt by order of Pope Gregory XVI by the project of Giuseppe Valadier , carried out by Pietro Camporese Jr. [2] According to the plan of Valadier, Camporese added to the palace a portico with 12 elegant antique columns, taken from the ruins of the Etruscan city of Wei . A pair of columns, framing the main entrance, are of later origin, from the church of San Paolo-fuor-le-Mour that burnt down in 1823 . [3]

In 1852 [4], the palazzo was bought by a rich banker, Karl Wedekind , who re-equipped the interior of the palace according to the plan of D. B. Jovenal. Since 1871, the building housed the Ministry of Education of the Kingdom of Italy . In a short period in September 1943, before the liberation of Rome, the palace was the official base of Fascisti romani .
