Gelasii Dobner (real name and surname in the world - Felix Iob Dobner , in monasticism - Gelasius a Sancta Catharina ) Czech. Gelasius Dobner ; May 30, 1719 , Prague - May 24, 1790 , ibid.) - Czech scholar, monk of the Order of poor regular Christian schools in the name of the Mother of God , teacher . The first forerunner of the Czech national revival.

Biography

Son of a joiner. In the family, everyone spoke German . At the beginning he studied with the Jesuits . In 1737 he joined the order of piarists. Continuing the study of philosophy and theology, he taught at the Piarist school in Vienna. He was a teacher of several schools of the Order in Bohemia and Moravia .

In 1752, he obtained the permission of the Czech Palace Office to organize the first Piarist school in Prague, for which he bought the building with his own money.

Under the patronage of the Prague Bishop Václav Vokoun, he was able to work with historical documents in the church libraries of Prague.

Having become an Austrian court historiographer, he received a small annual rent from the Austrian empress Maria Theresa , as a result of research and analysis of the obtained data, he established the boundaries of Great Moravia , dealt with the royal title of Prince Czechia Vladislav II , the Old Slavonic alphabet - Cyrillic and Glagunit , the Church Slavonic .

He collected historical materials, wrote (exclusively in Latin and in German) a lot of research on the church and political history of the Czech Republic, on archeology, bibliography, etc., and laid the foundation of Czech historical criticism.

At the request of the Czech members of his monastic order, he published the Czech chronicle of Vaclav Gaek in the Latin translation of Quiz, adding to the publication his detailed commentary, in which he proved the failure of many historical falsifications of Haek.

In addition, he published a chronicle of the active participant in the Hussite Wars Bartoshek from Dragonits.

The works of Gelasij Dobner on Czech history are still of great scientific importance. The main ones are:

  • Wenceslai Nagek a Liboezan ,
  • Annales Bohemorum e bohemica editione latine redditi et notis illustratis (Prague, 1761-1783)
  • Monumenta historica Bohemiae nusquam ante hoc edita (Prague, 1764–1786).
