Geography

The volcano is located in the southern part of Chile, in the area of Aisen del General Carlos Ibáñez del Campo .

Volcanic activity

Large volcanic eruptions occurred around 4750 BC. e. and around 1890 BC e. (6- point eruptions on the VEI scale of volcanic eruptions ), it is believed that the volcano erupted in 4750 BC. e. accompanied by a powerful explosion, which possibly led to the deaths of many, if not all groups of people living in central Patagonia at that time. Recently, the activity of the volcano was moderate, eruptions occurred in 1891 and 1971. In August-September 1971, there was a moderate eruption (VEI 3) from the northwestern part of the caldera , accompanied by the release of ash into the atmosphere, the rapid melting of the glacier caused lahars . Five people died from mudflows , many local residents were evacuated.

1991 Eruption

A large Plinian eruption of the Cerro-Hudson volcano occurred in August-October 1991 (5 points on the VEI eruption scale). During the eruption, 4.3 km³ of ash was thrown into the atmosphere. Part of the glacier at the top melted and fell in the form of mud streams. No one was injured during the eruption, but hundreds of people were evacuated from the vicinity of the volcano. Volcanic ash fell not only in Chile and Argentina, but also in the southern Atlantic Ocean and the Falkland Islands . In addition to ash, a large amount of gaseous sulfur dioxide and aerosols were also emitted into the atmosphere. The eruption of Cerro-Hudson volcano and the even more powerful eruption of Pinatubo volcano in the same year caused a general cooling effect over the next two years.

Volcano activity was also observed in 2011.
