San Saba ( Italian: San Saba ) - XXI district (Rione) of Rome .

Regulation

The area is located on Small Aventin Hill and extends in the southeast to the old city. In the north-west, the district’s border is created by Viale Manlio Gelsomini [1] and Aventino (Viale Aventino), respectively, in the north-east by Viale delle Terme di Caracalla [2] and Via di Porta San Sebastiano (Via di Porta San Sebastiano) [3] form the first mile of the Appian Way . In the south of San Saba is bounded by the Wall of Aurelian . The center of the district - Piazza Gian Lorenzo Bernini - is named after the famous Italian artist Lorenzo Bernini .

History

In 1921, the district separated from the XII district of Ripa and named after the ancient church.

Attractions

One of the main attractions of the area are the baths of Caracalla . Along them stretches the Appian Way to the Gates of St. Sebastian . In addition, here are the early Christian churches of Santa Balbin, Santa Nereo and Achille.

  1. ↑ Manilo Gelsomini Street is named after the Italian athlete-athlete, a member of the Italian resistance movement (1907-1944). M. Dzhelsomino was a military man and a doctor, he successfully ran 100 meters and played rugby. In his youth, he joined the Nazi Party and was captain of the 79th battalion of black shirts . He worked as a surgeon in the Roman Clinic Umberto I. During World War II he was the captain of the medical forces. He was in Rome when Pietro Badoglio declared announced the surrender of Italy. After the occupation of Lazio by German troops, M. Gelsomino entered the underground Roman resistance army and found refuge with partisans in the Viterbo mountains. Arrested by the Germans and killed in the Ardeatinsky caves .
