Provenance
Mirabella V was built as part of the superyacht park creation project for the former chairman of the board of directors and general director of Avis car rental company Joe Vittoria and was used for the charter. All Mirabella yachts, including Mirabella V, were subsequently sold to other owners. Mirabella V is no longer offered for charter.
Construction
The specification of the future owner meant the creation of a high-speed sailing yacht, providing a level of comfort previously possible only on motor yachts [1] .
To achieve this result, a single-masted structure made of composite materials was used, allowing freeing up space for passengers. The estimated speed of the yacht under sail with a favorable wind exceeds 20 knots.
Another requirement of the future owners was the ability to enter the Palm Beach Bay, which required the use of a lifting keel to reduce the draft in the marina [2] .
Mirabella V was designed by Irish engineer Ron Holland. Technical supervision of the performance of composite structures was carried out by High Modulus Europe Ltd.
Technical Features
Typically, ships of this size are made of steel or aluminum, but Mirabella V 'is built of composite materials, which solved three problems:
- construction acceleration
- reduced time and maintenance costs (composite panels do not require repair and anti-corrosion treatment),
- improvement of thermal and sound insulation [3] .
Another feature of the yacht is the presence of only one mast. Usually ships of more than 25 meters in length are built with two or three masts in order to divide the area of the sails into several areas that are easier to lift and operate. However, modern technologies allowed the Mirabella V to be equipped with the largest mast and the largest sail ever used.
One of the problems in the construction of the yacht was the search for ropes capable of holding the sails [4] .
Interesting Facts
- The height of the mast is 88.5 meters, which is almost twice the size of the Alexander Column and seven meters taller than the Ivan the Great Bell Tower . The load at the base of the mast is 440 tons.
- Due to the high mast height, the yacht cannot pass under any bridge that can be reached by water, including the Century Bridge over the Panama Canal (80 m), the road bridge over the Suez Canal (70 m) and bridges over the Bosphorus (64 m) .
- The 1833 m² Mirabella V is the largest in the world.
