Biography
Maria Astrid was born on February 17, 1954 in Betzdorf Castle. She became the firstborn in the family of the heir to the Luxembourg throne, Jean and his wife Josephine Charlotte of Belgium , born ten months after their parents' wedding. The king of Belgium Leopold III , her maternal grandfather, and Grand Duchess of Luxembourg Charlotte , her grandmother from her father’s side, became the godparents of the newborn.
The family subsequently born four younger children: Henri , Jean , Margaret and Guillaume . When Mary Astrid turned ten, her father inherited the throne of the Duchy of Luxembourg.
Education princess received in Luxembourg and Belgium. Received a diploma from a nurse in 1974. In 1977, she completed training in obtaining a certificate of a specialist in tropical medicine at the Prince Leopold Institute in Antwerp.
Since 1970, heads the youth division of the Luxembourg Red Cross.
