Biography
Nikolai Koshelev was born on December 25, 1916 in the village of Dmitrievsky (now - the city of Makeevka in the Donetsk People's Republic ). He studied at the school I-III steps No. 21. After graduating from a school for factory apprenticeship, he worked in a machine and tractor station in the Kashkadarya region of the Uzbek SSR . In 1932 - 1934 he served in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. In June 1941, Koshelev was again drafted into the army. In 1943 he graduated from the Kharkov Tank School. Since June of that year - on the fronts of World War II, he commanded a tank company of the 248th separate tank regiment of the 21st Army of the Western Front . He distinguished himself during the liberation of the Smolensk region [1] .
In the period from August 7 to September 16, 1943, Koshelev repeatedly distinguished himself in battles near Yelnya . So, in the area of the village of Delyachino, when his tank was hit, he continued to fight, destroying 2 tanks, 3 anti-tank guns and a large number of soldiers and officers. In the battle for the village of Zhdanovo, Koshelev destroyed 3 tanks, 1 self-propelled artillery, 2 anti-tank guns, 1 bunker, 1 bunker, 4 machine guns, about 30 enemy soldiers and officers. During the battle for the village of Vava, the Koshelev tank was again shot down, but the crew continued to fight. September 16, 1943, when the Koshelev tank was broken in several places and the entire crew was killed, Koshelev got out of the burning tank and continued to fight in the ranks of the infantry, dying in battle. He was buried in a mass grave in Yelnya [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of March 10, 1944, for "exemplary execution of the combat missions of command on the front of the struggle against the German invaders and the courage and heroism shown at the same time," Lieutenant Nikolai Koshelev was posthumously awarded the high rank of Hero of the Soviet Union . He was also awarded the Orders of Lenin , Red Banner , World War 2 degree [1] .
