Biography
Alexey Korotkov was born on August 12, 1904 in the village of Zvyagino (now - Pervomaysky District of the Yaroslavl Region ). After completing seven classes of school, he worked on the collective farm . In 1941, Korotkov was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. Since October of the same year - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. By October 1943, Red Army soldier Aleksey Korotkov was a machine gunner for the 1126th rifle regiment of the 334th rifle division of the 4th Shock Army of the Kalinin Front . He distinguished himself during the liberation of the Vitebsk region of the Byelorussian SSR [1] .
On October 6, 1943, during the battles for the village of Novaya Alekseyevka, Vitebsk District, Korotkov secretly crept up to the enemy machine gun and destroyed him with a grenade, thanks to which his platoon was able to rise to the attack. Noticing that two enemy soldiers had gotten close to the platoon commander, Lieutenant Staroverov, he closed it with himself, at the cost of his life, saving him from death. He was buried in a mass grave in the village of Belyaevo, Velizhsky district, Smolensk region [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of June 4, 1944, Red Army soldier Alexey Korotkov was posthumously awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union for "exemplary performance of the combat tasks of command on the front of the struggle against the German invaders and showing courage and heroism". He was also posthumously awarded the Order of Lenin [1] .
The monument to Korotkov was installed in the village of Nikolo-Ukhtom of Pervomaisky District [1] .
