History
The historical square arose on the spot where the first settlers of Tyumen erected a wooden fortress on the banks of the Tura River more than 400 years ago. This place has not been preserved since it was washed by Tura. The area was repeatedly built up and cleared, and took on a modern look in the 1960-1980s. In memory of the first settlement, a stone monument was erected in honor of the founding of the city.
Since January 21, 1952, a growth statue of V.I. Lenin from black stone has been standing on the square. In the late 1980s. it was removed, and in December 1992, a monument to Cossack Yermak and his comrades - a simple black metal cross and granite stone, was erected on the former flowerbed of the monument to Lenin. After a visit to the Tyumen region by Alexy II , several more pieces of granite were added to the monument to Yermak.
The dominant square is the Monument in memory of the fallen soldiers of World War II. The monument is a stone pylon 28 meters high. On the plate next to it are the names of the Tyumen, who became Heroes of the Soviet Union and full knights of the Order of Glory . The Eternal Fire burns here. The memorial was opened on May 9, 1968.
Behind the Historic Square is the House of Defense. It houses the Russian Defense Sports and Technical Organization, the Tyumen Regional Council of ROSTO, an aviation sports club, and automobile and radio engineering schools.
Also on the square is the I. Y. Slovtsov Museum Complex (the building of the former City Council of Tyumen ).
The Historical Square offers a beautiful view of the Tura River , the Bridge of lovers and the river part of Tyumen.
