The State Hermitage Youth Educational Center is a new museum space where experimental educational and cultural programs for students of St. Petersburg , other cities of Russia and foreign countries are created and implemented. Within the framework of these programs, cycles of lectures on the history and theory of art are held, round tables, international conferences, meetings with famous figures of culture and art, master classes by artists, student shows are held [1] .

Creation History
The beginning of the Youth Center was the creation of the Student Club. The order to establish the Hermitage Student Club at the scientific and educational department of the State Hermitage was signed by Director General M. B. Piotrovsky on November 14, 2000. Since its foundation, Sofia Vladimirovna Kudryavtseva, a leading researcher at the State Hermitage, has become the curator of the center. Since 2011, the Youth Center has been occupying premises in the East wing of the General Staff Building.
Key Activities
Hermitage Student Club sections
The core of the club is made up of thematic sections led by employees of the Hermitage. Members of the club can be students and graduate students of universities of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region, as well as senior students of colleges. The choice of sections depends solely on personal inclinations and interests [2] . The educational season at the Student Club begins on the first Sunday of October. On this day, a holiday is held at the Hermitage Theater - Student's Day.
In the 2013/2014 season, an entry will be opened in the following sections [3] :
- Alphabet of art
A series of lectures on the history and theory of world art. The extended part of the project was compiled according to the historical principle of the development of world art - from the most ancient period to our time.
- Milestones
Milestones in the history of art are “an almost universal history of art”. The works of various eras - antiquity , the Middle Ages , Renaissance , XX century , so unlike at first glance, have much in common. To find these common features is the purpose of the section.
- East
In lectures, classes at Hermitage expositions, meetings with specialists, and creative programs, the characteristics of the cultures of the Near and Far East are analyzed: India , Iran , China , Japan and other regions.
- Middle Ages
The purpose of the program is to get acquainted with the phenomenon of medieval culture of Western Europe and Byzantium .
- Christian art. Images and Stories
The program is dedicated to the birth, formation and development of the art of the Christian world from its origins to the 19th century.
- Painting genres
The lesson program is devoted to the special possibilities of painting , the specificity of its expressive means.
- Artist and Poet. Dialogues
A feature of the program is the identification of deep connections between the visual arts and the poetic word.
- 4D / Spatial Arts
The main subject of study is spatial arts ( architecture , landscape architecture , land art , media art ).
- Contemporary and contemporary art of the 20th — 21st centuries The origins
The program is focused on getting to know the origins and development of the most important trends in contemporary art in Western Europe and Russia.
- Actual art processes
Classes in the section are aimed at discussing the theoretical foundations of the pressing problems of contemporary art using the most significant events of the international art community as an example.
- Italian club
The program includes several sections: " The history of Italian art -" The Antique Cycle "," Antiquity in the art of Europe and Russia (painting, music, literature, architecture) "," Cities and museums of Italy "," Italian cinema ".
- German club
The section introduces the art, history and culture of German-speaking countries and peoples. First of all, it is Germany and Austria .
- French club
XIX — XX centuries The section's task is to comprehend the art of France during its heyday, when the capital of the country, Paris, becomes one of the main centers of world art.
- English club
The section introduces the features of English art using the example of the Hermitage collection.
- Petersburg club
The course is divided into three parts: 1) the initial stage of the formation of St. Petersburg; 2) Acquaintance with the architectural monuments of the city center from the inside; 3) Palace Square and its surroundings as a city-forming center.
- Art workshop
The course of drawing , painting and decorative composition consists of practical classes in the workshop and specialized theoretical excursions on the art of fine art at the Hermitage.
- Creative photography
In the classroom, students can master the basic skills of obtaining photographic images , develop their creative abilities and apply them in special programs of the Youth Center dedicated to photo art .
- Film making
The program on the history of world cinema , which includes cycles in national schools and auteur cinema.
- Hermitage for the mind and heart
The program is designed for the youth of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug , studying in St. Petersburg. Classes include lectures on the history of the city and the collections of the Hermitage, tours of other museums of the city and the suburbs of St. Petersburg.
- The Hermitage and its history. To the 250th anniversary of the State Hermitage
The program introduces students to various aspects of the life of the world-famous museum - from its foundation to the events of today.
- Digital workshop
The objectives of the workshop include creating and consolidating a basic and general level of technical knowledge and skills for confident work with most media technologies.

"Actual Art"
The program includes master classes and creative shows by famous artists, meetings with curators of international art projects, round tables on topical issues of contemporary art , lecture cycles on contemporary art, discussions and seminars. The program also involves representatives of specialized departments of universities of St. Petersburg (Department of Museum Affairs, St. Petersburg State University , Russian State Pedagogical University named after A.I. Herzen , Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture named after I.E. Repin , St. Petersburg State Art and Industry Academy named after A . L. Stieglitz and others) [4]

For exhibitions of contemporary art in the Hermitage, the Youth Educational Center prepares meetings with curators, lecture cycles, and master classes by artists [8] .

The Art Semester at the Hermitage
The youth center works not only with Petersburg students. For students of creative universities abroad, educational programs are carried out lasting from 1 to 6 weeks. The program includes excursions around St. Petersburg, drawing classes, visits to museums, country residences, workshops of contemporary artists, excursions to other cities in the region, meetings with students of St. Petersburg universities. A special place is occupied by the study of the Hermitage collections, including classes at exhibitions, meetings with curators of exhibitions, visiting funds.
A special educational program has been developed for specialists in the field of museum education coming to seminars and conferences from other cities of Russia, Europe and the USA. There are projects aimed at the study and popularization of 20th century art and contemporary art - from the avant-garde movements of the beginning of the century to actual art projects of the first years of the third millennium [10] .
Museum and Museum Workers
On February 1, 2013, the Youth Center launched a new unique educational program “Museum and Museum Workers”, initiated at the Department of Museum Business and Monument Protection, Faculty of Philosophy, St. Petersburg State University and approved by M. B. Piotrovsky . The program is designed for students in grades 9-11. Its main goal is to interest school graduates in the profession of a museum worker, to show what a modern museum is, how it works, what its employees do. During the school year, schoolchildren meet with the principal, custodians, restorers, curators, get acquainted with the work of various departments of the Hermitage, and participate in the museum’s interactive programs [11] .
Cultural Programs
The youth educational center implements various cultural programs: international festivals dedicated to the history and traditions of different countries and peoples, meetings with cultural and art workers and others.
“Meet Yamal!”
The program "Meet Yamal!" Was developed and implemented by the employees of the Youth Center together with representatives of the Yamalo-Nenets community, members of the Student Club. It includes, in particular, an exhibition of objects of applied art, master classes, folklore concerts, screenings of documentaries [12] .
“World Culture Festival at the Youth Educational Center”
During the days of the program, students of St. Petersburg can get acquainted with the culture, history, art and traditions of the peoples of the world. The feeling of immersion in the atmosphere of national color is created through meetings, video shows and master classes [13] .
Interpretation
“Interpretation” is an annual joint project of students from the Creative Photography section and students from the faculty of photography at the Parsons School of Design in New York . The author of the idea and the project curator is the head of the Youth Center S. V. Kudryavtseva, curators and project managers are photography teachers Igor Lebedev and Thomas Werner. Each year, students are offered a theme for creating photo works, for example, “Love”, “Fear”, “Portrait in a Museum”, “Interaction and Space”. A feature of the project is the involvement of young photographers in the space of the art museum: students study examples of topics in art, listen to lectures, make photo sketches at the museum's exposition. Curators select the best pictures on each side and organize a joint exhibition at the Hermitage Youth Center. The presentation of works is accompanied by a discussion with the participation of authors of photographs and master classes by photographers.

During meetings and conversations with museum staff, students become acquainted with the features of museum work, various aspects of the Hermitage’s creative life, which allows a deeper understanding of its significance as a center of modern culture.
"VIP-guests of the Youth Educational Center"
In the framework of this program, students have the opportunity to get acquainted and communicate with famous cultural figures, representatives of the St. Petersburg intelligentsia, curators and organizers of exhibitions, foreign experts in the field of art, diplomats working in St. Petersburg [13] .
