Biography
After completing his basic education in his native city, he entered the theological school in Veliky Tarnovo , who was the heir at the Theological Seminary in the Peter and Paul Monastery, after the successful completion of which in 1891 he was invited to teach in Sevlievo. He worked there for three years.
After that he left for Russia, where in 1898 he graduated from the Kiev Theological Academy .
Upon returning to Bulgaria, he worked at the Kazanlysh Pedagogical College. As a teacher, Grigor Arabadzhiev launched an active educational activity. Under his editorship, the publication of the spiritual and literary magazine Orthodox missionary began.
His multilateral activities for the benefit of the Church did not go unnoticed by the hierarchy of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. Metropolitan of Sliven Gervasius (Georgiev) invited him to become his protosingel .
On September 14, 1904, after being tonsured a monk with the name of Hilarion , he was ordained to the rank of Hierodeacon and appointed for the protosingel of the Sliven Metropolis .
After that, he taught for several years at the Sofia Theological Seminary , where he was elevated to the rank of hieromonk and subsequently entrusted to the rank of archimandrite .
In 1908 he was appointed rector of the Tsarigrad Theological Seminary .
From 1910 to 1917 - again protosingel of the Sliven Metropolis.
On November 25, 1917, in the church of the Holy Great Martyr Demetrius in Sliven, Archimandrite Hilarion was promoted to the rank of Bishop with the title Velichsky and was appointed vicar of the Sliven Metropolis . The consecration was performed by Metropolitan of Sliven Gervasius (Georgiev) , Metropolitan of Ohrid Boris (Georgiev) and Bishop of Levki Varlaam (Konstantinov) .
After the death of Metropolitan Gervasius, on June 11, 1922, Bishop Hilarion was elected his successor. On July 22, 1922, the election was approved by the Holy Synod, and the next day, in the paraclis of the Holy Synod, the canonical election of Bishop Hilarion was made by Metropolitan of Sliven. On August 27 of the same year, after receiving the corresponding royal decree, Metropolitan Hilarion left for his diocese.
Metropolitan Hilarion, whose diocese was constantly subjected to massive heterodox propaganda, did much to defend Orthodoxy in his diocese.
Through the efforts of Metropolitan Hilarion, the current building was built at the Sliven Metropolis. Previously, the metropolis was located in different buildings, which created certain inconveniences for the diocesan administration. In 1933, Metropolitan Hilarion acquired a plot of land with the possibility of building a building that meets the needs of the diocese. In early 1934, the building plan was ready. For the construction of the metropolitan house, the House of the Holy Synod released a loan of 500,000 leva, and from the donations another 431,221 leva was collected. In 1935, the Ministry of Improvement released another 400,000 leva. The construction of the buildings was completed in 1939, but Metropolitan Hilarion was not destined to wait for its completion: he died on March 13 of the same year. The consecration of the new two-story metropolitan building was completed on July 16, 1939.
