Subject and Interpretation

There are different opinions about the meaning of the song. Most of them relate to the fight against addiction , but former Metallica bassist Jason Newstead believed the text was about a person who was subjected to psychological torture .

Text writer James Hetfield explained the meaning of the song in an interview with Playboy magazine , given in 2001 :

While we were recording Load , I felt like I was going to stop drinking. “Maybe I'm missing something. Everyone else seems so happy. I also want to be happy. " I planned my life based on when there will be a hangover : “„ Misfits “perform on Friday night, then Saturday is busy with a hangover.” I spent many days. A year visiting the procedure, I learned a lot about myself. There are many things that hurt you when you grow, no one knows why. “Bleeding Me” is about this: I tried with blood to release all the bad, remove the evil. When I went to therapy, I found unpleasant things there. Dark spot.

Original text
Around the time of Load, I felt I wanted to stop drinking. “Maybe I'm missing out on something. Everyone else seems so happy all the time. I want to get happy. “I'd plan my life around a hangover:„ The Misfits are playing in town Friday night, so Saturday is hangover day. “I lost a lot of days in my life. Going to therapy for a year, I learned a lot about myself. There's a lot of things that scar you when you're growing up, you don't know why. The song Bleeding Me is about that: I was trying to bleed out all bad, get the evil out. While I was going through therapy, I discovered some ugly stuff in there. A dark spot.

In an interview with Kerrang! Hetfield spoke about his thoughts about the relationship of the rest of the group to him and his lyrics: “How could I find out if the rest of the guys feel my lyrics the same way I do? I could sing “Bleeding Me” with tears in my eyes, and they could not care ”( Eng. “ How did I know whether the rest of the guys in the band felt as much about the lyrics as I did? I could be singing 'Bleeding Me' with a tear in my eye and the rest of the guys might not have cared ". ).

Demo

The demo of the song was also called “Bleeding Me” and was an instrumental composition recorded by Hetfield and Ulrich on April 7, 1995 in Ulrich's home music studio “Dungeon”.
