History
In the mid-19th century, a resident of Hinterbruhl discovered a gypsum deposit on a local hill. Soon, the widespread development of this mineral began. In 1912, after an explosion in a mine, more than 20 million liters of water poured into the tunnels and adits with monstrous force. As a result of flooding, the largest underground lake in Europe was formed. After that, the production of gypsum was permanently stopped.
In the following years, attempts were made to use a damp dungeon for growing mushrooms or storing wine, but these enterprises failed. In 1932, enthusiasts opened boat trips along the flooded adit and now exhibits dedicated to the hard and dangerous work of miners are located in the adit.
During World War II , the Heinkel He 162 Volksjager was manufactured in a mine protected from air attacks . The layout and individual fragments of this fighter-interceptor are presented in an underground exhibition. About 2 thousand people worked in assembly shops, including prisoners of war. After the war, Segrott, a privately owned property, again began to receive tourists. Since then, this attraction has been visited by more than 10 million people from all over the world. The underground lake was used in the filming of the 1993 Hollywood movie Three Musketeers .
On May 31, 2004, a boat with tourists turned over on the lake. Despite the fact that the depth reaches human growth in few places, four tourists were under the boat and died. The causes of the disaster were called the unsuccessful design of the boat and its congestion by passengers. The manager Segrott and approved the use of this boat, the official was sentenced to imprisonment. Currently, two boats of a different design are used on the lake, and their steering has a captain's license.
